Will Google Become More Redundant With Time As AI Advances With More Proactive Search Tools Like Chat GPT?

Evolution is universal. We know that as humans advance, technology advances, and we depend on AI and such advancements now more than ever.  Big Corporations and Entrepreneurs want to invest in the same. According to research, 60% of entrepreneurs believe that AI is currently the most promising technology from an innovation standpoint.

Search Engines And AI: A Brief History

One must wonder when did all of this start? Early search engines were maintained manually by humans. These were limited to change and slow, and therefore, could not keep up with the phenomenal rate of growth experienced by the World Wide Web.

In 1990, Alan Emtage designed the first search engine known as “Archie.” He was a student at McGill University in Montreal. The search engine was for File Transfer Protocol (FTP) sites and existed before the development of the World Wide Web. Such an invention sparked the ever-blazing fire of advancements.

Later, three bot-fed search engines, JumpStation, the World Wide Web Worm, and the Repository-Based Software Engineering (RBSE) Spider, had debuted online by December 1993. JumpStation took information about the title and header from web pages and used a straightforward linear search to get them. The early search engines did not do link analysis or cache full pages, and one couldn’t locate a site without its exact name. As technology progressed, various search engines started making their mark in our everyday lives.

The search engine that continues to leave an impression in every part of the world, no matter how small, is Google. It first appeared in 1998, and its ambitious and benevolent purpose was, and still is, to organise the world’s knowledge and make it widely available and valuable.

How Does Google Make Our Lives Better?

Google has transformed how we live our lives in countless ways. Here are a few:

  • Access To Information: Google’s search engine has made it incredibly easy to find information on virtually any topic imaginable. Whether you need to research a school project, learn a new skill, or simply satisfy your curiosity, its vast database of websites, articles, and resources is always at your fingertips.

  • Communication: Google’s suite of communication tools, including Gmail, Google Meet, and Google Chat, have made it easier to stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues, no matter where they reside.

  • Navigation: Google Maps has revolutionised how we navigate the world around us, making it easy to find our way, discover new places, and avoid traffic and other obstacles.
  • Entertainment: Google’s YouTube platform has given us access to an endless supply of videos, music, and other forms of entertainment, making it easy to find and enjoy the content that suits our interests and preferences.
  • Efficiency: Google’s suite of productivity tools, including Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, have made it easier than ever to collaborate with others, share information, and get work done more efficiently.

We are highly dependent on Google’s services in our daily lives. Google’s search engine is often our first stop when we need information, and Gmail is a popular email service for personal and professional communication. Google’s productivity tools have become widely used alternatives to traditional office software. While there are alternatives available for many of Google’s services, its dominance in these areas makes it highly challenging to avoid reliance on its services.

How Is Chat GPT Better Than Google?

Chat GPT and Google are fundamentally different technologies designed to serve distinct purposes. Chat GPT is a language model that can generate human-like responses to user queries, while Google is a search engine that retrieves and displays information from across the internet.

One area in which Chat GPT may be considered better than Google is its ability to generate personalised and context-specific responses to user queries. Unlike Google, which retrieves information from existing web pages, Chat GPT can forge responses based on the specific context of the user’s request, taking into account factors such as the user’s previous interactions with the model and their personal preferences. However, ChatGPT lags behind Google when providing updated information.

Will Chat GPT Take Over Google?

While AI technology is rapidly advancing, it is essential to remember that AI complements human intelligence and does not replace it. Chat GPT can’t currently take over Google. Search engines like Google are designed to index words and phrases and comb through billions of web pages to discover what you’re looking for. They are used to find websites and suggest other potentially relevant pages. Additionally, Google is a massive technology company with many different products and services, and it is unlikely for a single AI model to take over.

Can Chat GPT And Google Coexist?

Even though Chat GPT reached 5 million people within five days, AI models like ChatGPT can be used to enhance the capabilities of products like Google or work in different areas altogether.

Many companies already use AI technology like chatbots and virtual assistants to improve customer service and automate certain tasks. Google itself has developed many AI-powered products, such as Google Assistant and Google Translate. However, we must remember that when it comes to Artificial Intelligence, Google and OpenAI are competitors. Both businesses are prominent players in the field and have greatly influenced the creation of models for natural language processing.

Conclusion

While the advancement of AI technology like ChatGPT is impressive, it is unlikely that it will make Google redundant. Google is a massive technology company with a wide range of products and services, and it has the resources to incorporate AI technology into its operations. Additionally, Google has been using AI technology for many years to improve its search algorithms and other products. It is important to remember that AI technology is designed to complement human intelligence, not replace it. However, looking at all the possibilities and advancements, one must stop and question, ‘How far is far enough?’
